Amalfi Coast Day Tour on Tripadvisor

20 tips for visiting the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast, with its dramatic cliffs, sparkling blue waters, and charming villages, is a dream destination for many travelers. Whether you’re sipping limoncello in Positano, exploring the ancient ruins of Pompeii, or soaking in the sun on a secluded beach, there’s no shortage of beauty and adventure here. But as with any iconic destination, the Amalfi Coast comes with its own set of challenges—narrow roads, crowded hotspots, and an ever-changing climate. That’s why we’ve put together 20 expert tips to help you make the most of your trip. From hidden gems to practical advice, these tips will ensure your time on the coast is as smooth and memorable as the views themselves.

1.Book in advance whenever possible

20 tips for Amalfi Coast

This is the most crucial tip for your Amalfi Coast trip: book as much as possible ahead of time. This applies to almost everything – from airport transfers and private transportation to accommodation, boat tours, ferry tickets, and even restaurant reservations (especially for dinner).

While last-minute bookings might be possible during the quieter months, it’s absolutely essential to plan ahead if you’re visiting during the high season.

In the summer, accommodations—particularly those in prime locations, easily accessible, and reasonably priced—tend to sell out quickly. Even luxury hotels often face full bookings during peak season.

Similarly, popular restaurants in Positano and Amalfi are often fully booked for dinner days or even weeks in advance. Don’t expect to secure a boat rental or a tour without prior planning either. Ferries for traveling between towns also fill up fast and should be reserved in advance.

Things like airport transfers or hiring a private driver for the day should be arranged well ahead of time as well.

Although it might seem like a hassle to research and make all these arrangements upfront, this is the best way to ensure a smooth and enjoyable Amalfi Coast vacation. Plus, booking in advance lets you compare prices and find the best deals. It’s equally important to research key details like your accommodation’s location before you go. More on that in the next tips!

2.Don’t book blindly, compare prices

Price comparison

While booking in advance is crucial, it’s equally important to compare different options before making a reservation. This is relatively straightforward when it comes to accommodations, where you can easily view various choices on platforms like Booking.com or Expedia. However, it becomes a bit trickier when dealing with transportation, transfers, or tours.

To illustrate, let me share an example from our recent trip. When searching for a transfer from Naples Airport to Positano, we explored several tour websites and reached out to local agencies directly. The prices for the same service – a one-way private transfer for five people with luggage – ranged from 90 to 190 EUR, depending on the provider. We ultimately booked our transfer at the lower price.

As fuel costs increased and the high season approached, rates also went up. The same companies that initially quoted us 190 EUR were charging 250 EUR by summer.

We also looked into various transfers along the Amalfi Coast itself. In some cases, the price difference between providers was a modest 20-30 EUR. However, there were instances where the difference exceeded 100 EUR for the exact same service.

So, doing your research and booking in advance can not only save you from unnecessary stress, but it can also help you avoid overpaying.

Keep in mind that the prices mentioned here are just for reference and may vary when you travel. Costs continue to rise, and as one of the most popular destinations in the world, the Amalfi Coast is no exception.

3.Do the proper research for accomodations

Do the proper research for accomodations

The towns along the Amalfi Coast are nestled between the sea and the mountains, with most houses built into the cliffs. While this creates a stunning, picturesque landscape, it also means that depending on where you stay, you may need to climb a lot of stairs.

At first, this may not seem like a big deal, but you’ll soon realize that you could end up climbing hundreds of stairs every time you want to go somewhere. That’s why it’s important to carefully consider the location of your accommodation. Read reviews, check the map to see if there are nearby restaurants or food stores, and note how far the nearest bus stop is.

Not all towns on the Amalfi Coast are the same, though. While Positano is known for its steep hills, many accommodations in Amalfi are located closer to the water, so there are no stairs to navigate. Ravello, perched high on a hill, is surprisingly flat in its town center, so as long as you stay there, you won’t need to worry much about stairs.

The number of stairs you’ll need to climb really depends on where you stay. Make sure to know exactly what to expect before booking.

Additionally, consider how accessible the location is by car, public transport, or boat. For more details on each town and our tips on where to stay, check out our detailed guide linked below.

4.Don’t rush your decision about renting a car

Don't rush your decision about renting a car

Although it may seem like the best way to explore the Amalfi Coast is by car, think carefully before renting one! I strongly advise against driving along the Amalfi Coast, especially between June and September, and even May and October are extremely busy months.

As mentioned earlier, there is only ONE MAIN ROAD that connects all the major towns on the Amalfi Coast. This narrow, cliffside road is full of twists and turns, with heavy traffic. In fact, the traffic has become so problematic that local authorities have recently implemented new restrictions on who can drive, and when.

A license plate system has been introduced for the high season, allowing alternating driving days. However, I’m not convinced this will make the area any more livable for locals. Some people we spoke to mentioned they can’t even use their cars during the summer due to the overwhelming traffic and the fact that it takes hours to get anywhere, not to mention the lack of parking.

Parking on the Amalfi Coast is both limited and expensive. Even if you manage to find a spot, you’ll likely pay around 10 EUR per hour for a small car.

So, I really can’t emphasize this enough: we do not recommend driving on the Amalfi Coast during the high season. Honestly, I’d think twice about renting a car even in April or early November.

Also, keep in mind that many areas in Italy, including the Amalfi Coast, have limited traffic zones (ZTL), where only local traffic is allowed. These areas are monitored by cameras, and if you enter a restricted zone, you can be fined for each violation.

So, if you’re driving around searching for a parking spot and accidentally enter a restricted zone multiple times, you’ll face fines for each entry. It’s just not worth the hassle!

Instead, consider booking car transfers or ferries for longer distances, or use public transportation to travel between towns without a harbor. Renting a scooter is another option, but driving along the Amalfi Coast during peak season can be overwhelming, especially if you’re inexperienced. This is not the ideal place to rent a scooter if you’re new to it.

If you’re willing to tackle lots of stairs and do some hiking, walking between towns on the Amalfi Coast is an option. However, this is best suited for those with plenty of time who want to explore the area more deeply, beyond the main tourist attractions.

PRO TIP: If you do decide to rent a car, check out this website. They offer some of the best deals available, and you can also opt for their affordable full insurance. Many local car rental agencies that advertise “full” insurance have fine print that reveals they only cover 50% of costs in the Campania region (which includes the Amalfi Coast).

5.Book a tour if you are planning a day trip to the Amalfi Coast

Book a tour if you are planning a day trip to the Amalfi Coast

If you’re only visiting the Amalfi Coast for a single day, booking a driving tour is a smart choice. It will save you valuable time spent on research, money on transfers or public transport, and the stress of arranging everything yourself while still ensuring an enjoyable experience!

There are countless tours departing from Naples, Sorrento, or even Rome, offering a range of options to match your interests and budget. Most tours include visits to the Amalfi Coast’s top towns, with some even offering boat rides to explore the coastline from the water. Additionally, some tours allow time for a swim.

Here’s a curated list of some of the best day tours to the Amalfi Coast:

  • From Sorrento: This popular car tour takes you to the most scenic spots, offering plenty of free time in Amalfi. If you’d like, you can also visit Ravello. It’s also one of the most affordable Amalfi Coast day trips.

  • From Naples or Sorrento: This car tour is one of the most well-liked options from Naples to the Amalfi Coast. It includes all transportation and visits the top attractions like Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello, with the added option of a boat ride.

  • From Naples: This car day tour is one of the most comprehensive Amalfi Coast excursions from Naples. You can select from different options and group sizes based on your budget and preferences.

TIP: Depending on where you’re staying and your plans, you could even book multiple day tours in the Amalfi Coast region. For instance, if you’re staying in Sorrento, you could take a car tour covering the Amalfi Coast’s highlights one day, then go on a guided tour of the Path of the Gods the next.

6.Prevent motion sickness

Prevent motion sickness

Whether you are traveling on the Amalfi Coast by car, bus, or boat, consider taking something for motion sickness.

Some roads on the Amalfi Coast are really winding and traveling here will upset even the strongest stomach. This is especially the case for the road east of Positano and almost all the way to Amalfi town.

We didn’t experience any problems on the boat, but all of us were really glad to get out of the car/van/ bus every time we drove even for just 15-20 minutes.

7.Try booking for the shoulder seasons

Try booking for the shoulder seasons

If you think the Amalfi Coast is busy in May or June, weekends in July and August are even worse. If you’re flying out of Naples on a Sunday evening, it’s best to leave early, as roads can be packed. The ideal visiting months are May, and late September to October, though they’re becoming busier. For fewer crowds, consider April or late October-November, but expect unpredictable weather. The quietest time is November to March, though many businesses close, and transportation options are limited during winter.

8.Correct footwear is key

Correct footwear is key

The Amalfi Coast towns are filled with stairs and steep paths, so comfortable footwear is essential for walking. Bring sturdy shoes or sandals for exploring, but don’t forget to pack dressier shoes for the evening, as Italians typically dress up and avoid casual footwear like sneakers or flip-flops. Since many beaches are rocky or pebbly, water shoes are also a good idea for comfort.

9.Don’t limit your tour to the touristy areas

Don't limit your tour to the touristy areas

During the summer, the Amalfi Coast is crowded with visitors flocking to Positano’s vibrant streets and Ravello’s scenic views. However, if you venture off the beaten path, you’ll find areas that have remained unchanged for centuries. Explore hidden coastal paths to Tramonti, or visit Minori, a quaint town along the “Path of the Lemons.” For a quieter beach experience, head to Spiaggia del Fornillo in Positano or hike to the tranquil Valle delle Ferriere near Amalfi, known for its waterfalls and forest.

10.Include the excavation sites in your trip

Journeying through time and tragedy on a private tour of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Boscoreale. Unveiling the echoes of ancient civilizations preserved in ash and history etched in every stone

The driving tour makes it incredibly convenient to visit the famous archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum, as it connects these locations to the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, and Naples. If you’re traveling light, it’s easy to stop by these ancient ruins either on your way to or from the coast. However, if you’re carrying a lot of luggage, it’s a good idea to head to your hotel first and leave the sightseeing for later. These archaeological sites also make for an excellent day trip from either Sorrento or Naples, offering a chance to explore the history of these ancient Roman cities.

11.Don’t leave too late

Don't leave too late

Getting an early start when traveling to the Amalfi Coast is key to making the most of your trip. First, the roads, particularly during the summer months, can quickly become congested with tourists, leading to long delays. Starting your day early helps you avoid the bulk of the traffic, allowing for smoother travel between towns. Furthermore, many of the Amalfi Coast’s popular attractions, such as hiking trails and beaches, are much less crowded in the morning. This gives you a more peaceful experience and better photo opportunities without the crowds. Also, the temperatures are generally cooler in the early hours, which makes outdoor activities like hiking or walking through towns much more comfortable. By beginning your day early, you can take in more sights, enjoy leisurely meals, and still have time to relax before the evening rush. Additionally, early mornings often present the best lighting for photography, especially when capturing the stunning coastal views. Many restaurants and shops open earlier too, so you can experience local culture without the usual crowds. For anyone looking to make the most of their time on the Amalfi Coast, getting an early start ensures you avoid the crowds and the heat while still making the most of the region’s beauty and charm.

12.Stay hydrated

Stay hydrated

Staying hydrated is crucial when visiting the Amalfi Coast, especially during the hot summer months. The region’s sunny, Mediterranean climate can quickly lead to dehydration, particularly if you’re spending time outdoors exploring the steep hills and winding streets. Hiking the rugged trails, wandering between towns, or lounging on the pebbly beaches can cause you to sweat more than usual. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, dizziness, and even heatstroke, all of which can ruin your travel experience. By drinking plenty of water throughout the day, you’ll maintain your energy levels and stay comfortable while enjoying the stunning scenery. Many of the coastal paths, such as the famous Path of the Gods, offer little shade, so having water on hand is essential for a safe and enjoyable hike. In addition, staying hydrated helps with digestion, which is important when sampling the region’s rich local cuisine. Always carry a reusable water bottle, especially when venturing into more remote areas, as public drinking fountains may be scarce. Proper hydration also helps to beat the heat during long stretches between activities, ensuring you have the stamina to keep exploring the Amalfi Coast’s charming towns and pristine beaches.

13.Pack a daypack

Pack a daypack

Bringing a daypack to the Amalfi Coast is highly recommended for a variety of reasons. The coastal region is filled with narrow streets, steep staircases, and long walks, and a daypack allows you to carry all your essentials without being weighed down. It’s perfect for holding water, sunscreen, snacks, a hat, and a camera while you explore the scenic towns or hike along the cliffs. A daypack is also useful for carrying a light jacket in case the weather changes unexpectedly. Whether you’re visiting Pompeii, hopping between towns, or relaxing at the beach, a compact bag helps you stay organized and comfortable. Additionally, many of the Amalfi Coast’s attractions, such as hiking paths or boat tours, require a bit of preparation, and a daypack gives you the flexibility to pack what you need without lugging around a bulky suitcase. It’s also ideal for carrying souvenirs or small purchases you make throughout the day. The Amalfi Coast’s natural beauty often invites spontaneous stops for photos or a quick swim, and a daypack makes it easy to carry everything you need while on the go.

14.Enjoy local food

When visiting the Amalfi Coast, indulging in local food is a must. The region’s cuisine is rich with fresh, seasonal ingredients, particularly seafood, which is caught daily from the Mediterranean. Dishes like spaghetti alle vongole (spaghetti with clams) and delizia al limone (lemon cake) offer a true taste of the area’s flavors, with the coast’s famous lemons adding a unique zest to many dishes. Dining on local food not only enhances your travel experience but also gives you a deeper connection to the culture. From freshly baked pizza to traditional pastries, each meal is a reflection of the coastal lifestyle. By savoring local cuisine, you support the region’s farmers, fishermen, and artisans, making your meal an integral part of the experience. Enjoying these dishes while overlooking the stunning coastline or in charming seaside towns adds to the magic of the trip, making each bite unforgettable.

15.Do some research about beaches

The Amalfi Coast is famous for its stunning beaches, but they vary greatly in terms of accessibility, ambiance, and crowds. Some beaches are pebbly and require a bit of effort to reach, while others are equipped with amenities like loungers and restaurants. Doing research beforehand allows you to choose the right beach based on your preferences, whether you’re looking for a quieter, more secluded spot or a lively, vibrant atmosphere. Understanding the layout of the coast helps you plan your days efficiently, ensuring you make the most of your beach time. Additionally, knowing where to rent beach chairs or find food and drink can improve your experience. Be sure to research the best beaches near the towns you plan to visit and look into the water quality, facilities, and any local regulations, so you’re fully prepared for a relaxing day by the sea.

16.Respect local customs

Respect local customs

Respecting local customs when visiting the Amalfi Coast is crucial to ensuring a positive experience and showing appreciation for the local culture. Italians take great pride in their traditions, from the way they dress to how they interact in social settings. For example, dressing smartly when dining out is important, as locals tend to avoid casual attire like flip-flops or gym clothes in restaurants. Understanding basic Italian etiquette, such as greeting with a handshake and not rushing meals, will help you fit in seamlessly. Also, be mindful of the quiet hours in towns, particularly in the evenings, as noise levels are respected. By respecting these customs, you show that you value the culture, which can also lead to warmer interactions with locals. It helps preserve the charm and integrity of the Amalfi Coast while fostering a more respectful and enjoyable travel experience for everyone. Additionally, respecting customs like proper tipping, not interrupting during conversations, and understanding the importance of family can deepen your connection to the region.

17.Don’t overthink, just enjoy it

Don't overthink

When visiting the Amalfi Coast, you shouldn’t overly worry about your expenses if you want to fully embrace the experience. The region offers an unforgettable blend of natural beauty, culture, and cuisine, and sometimes it’s worth splurging a little to enjoy it to the fullest. From dining at seaside restaurants with breathtaking views to staying in charming hotels overlooking the coast, investing in experiences like boat trips or local tours can create lasting memories. While it’s important to budget, the Amalfi Coast’s unique charm is best experienced without constantly focusing on costs. Prioritize quality experiences and savor every moment. Tipping is always appreciated.

18.Don’t be afraid going “solo”

the Amalfi Coast has earned its reputation as a world-renowned destination, captivating the hearts of travelers and earning a spot on countless bucket lists

The Amalfi Coast is an excellent destination for solo travelers, offering a sense of safety and adventure. The towns are welcoming, and there’s a wide variety of activities to enjoy on your own, from exploring charming streets to hiking scenic trails. Public transportation and well-maintained walking paths make it easy to get around. The peaceful atmosphere allows for reflection and personal discovery, whether you’re enjoying a solo meal with a view or simply taking in the stunning coastline. Traveling solo here lets you fully immerse in the experience, meet new people, and follow your own pace without distractions.

19.Learn some basic Italian

Learning some basic Italian when visiting the Amalfi Coast can greatly enhance your experience. While many people in the tourist industry speak English, knowing a few key phrases helps you connect with locals on a deeper level. It shows respect for the culture and makes interactions more personal. Simple greetings like “buongiorno” (good morning) or “grazie” (thank you) can go a long way in building rapport. It also makes navigating less touristy areas easier and more rewarding. Plus, locals often appreciate any effort to speak their language, creating a more enriching and enjoyable visit.

20.Have a ton of fun!

The Amalfi Coast is a place meant for fun, and there’s no reason not to embrace it wholeheartedly during your visit. From the stunning, cliffside villages to the sparkling Mediterranean waters, every corner of this region invites excitement and adventure. Whether you’re exploring ancient ruins, sampling delicious local food, or cruising along the coast on a boat, the opportunities for fun are endless. You can hike the famous Path of the Gods, enjoy thrilling water sports, or simply lounge on the beach while taking in breathtaking views. The vibrant atmosphere of towns like Positano, with its colorful buildings and lively streets, encourages spontaneous exploration, while Ravello offers quieter moments with panoramic views. Don’t miss the chance to indulge in local specialties, from freshly caught seafood to the famous limoncello, which adds a bit of fun to every meal. The Amalfi Coast also has a rich history and culture, which provides ample opportunities to learn while still having a great time. Whether you’re mingling with locals at a café or dancing the night away in a seaside bar, there’s a sense of joy and excitement everywhere you go. The stunning landscapes invite you to take photos at every turn, turning each moment into a memory. Even if you’re traveling alone, you’ll find plenty of people to share experiences with and opportunities to make new friends. The Amalfi Coast is not just about sightseeing – it’s about feeling the energy, embracing the spirit of the place, and letting yourself enjoy everything it has to offer. So, throw yourself into the adventure, soak up the beauty, and, most importantly, have fun.
