The Amalfi Coast, with its dramatic cliffs, sparkling blue waters, and charming villages, is a dream destination for many travelers. Whether you’re sipping limoncello in Positano, exploring the ancient ruins of Pompeii, or soaking in the sun on a secluded beach, there’s no shortage of beauty and adventure here. But as with any iconic destination, the Amalfi Coast comes with its own set of challenges—narrow roads, crowded hotspots, and an ever-changing climate. That’s why we’ve put together 20 expert tips to help you make the most of your trip. From hidden gems to practical advice, these tips will ensure your time on the coast is as smooth and memorable as the views themselves.

1.Book in advance whenever possible

This is the most crucial tip for your Amalfi Coast trip: book as much as possible ahead of time. This applies to almost everything – from airport transfers and private transportation to accommodation, boat tours, ferry tickets, and even restaurant reservations (especially for dinner).

While last-minute bookings might be possible during the quieter months, it’s absolutely essential to plan ahead if you’re visiting during the high season.

In the summer, accommodations—particularly those in prime locations, easily accessible, and reasonably priced—tend to sell out quickly. Even luxury hotels often face full bookings during peak season.

Similarly, popular restaurants in Positano and Amalfi are often fully booked for dinner days or even weeks in advance. Don’t expect to secure a boat rental or a tour without prior planning either. Ferries for traveling between towns also fill up fast and should be reserved in advance.

Things like airport transfers or hiring a private driver for the day should be arranged well ahead of time as well.

Although it might seem like a hassle to research and make all these arrangements upfront, this is the best way to ensure a smooth and enjoyable Amalfi Coast vacation. Plus, booking in advance lets you compare prices and find the best deals. It’s equally important to research key details like your accommodation’s location before you go. 2.Don’t book blindly, compare prices

Price comparison

While booking in advance is crucial, it’s equally important to compare different options before making a reservation. This is relatively straightforward when it comes to accommodations, where you can easily view various choices on platforms like Booking.com or Expedia. However, it becomes a bit trickier when dealing with transportation, transfers, or tours.

To illustrate, let me share an example from our recent trip. When searching for a transfer from Naples Airport to Positano, we explored several tour websites and reached out to local agencies directly. The prices for the same service – a one-way private transfer for five people with luggage – ranged from 90 to 190 EUR, depending on the provider. We ultimately booked our transfer at the lower price.

As fuel costs increased and the high season approached, rates also went up. The same companies that initially quoted us 190 EUR were charging 250 EUR by summer.

We also looked into various transfers along the Amalfi Coast itself. In some cases, the price difference between providers was a modest 20-30 EUR. However, there were instances where the difference exceeded 100 EUR for the exact same service.

So, doing your research and booking in advance can not only save you from unnecessary stress, but it can also help you avoid overpaying.

Keep in mind that the prices mentioned here are just for reference and may vary when you travel. Costs continue to rise, and as one of the most popular destinations in the world, the Amalfi Coast is no exception.

3.Do the proper research for accomodations

The towns along the Amalfi Coast are nestled between the sea and the mountains, with most houses built into the cliffs. While this creates a stunning, picturesque landscape, it also means that depending on where you stay, you may need to climb a lot of stairs.

At first, this may not seem like a big deal, but you’ll soon realize that you could end up climbing hundreds of stairs every time you want to go somewhere. That’s why it’s important to carefully consider the location of your accommodation. Read reviews, check the map to see if there are nearby restaurants or food stores, and note how far the nearest bus stop is.

Not all towns on the Amalfi Coast are the same, though. While Positano is known for its steep hills, many accommodations in Amalfi are located closer to the water, so there are no stairs to navigate. Ravello, perched high on a hill, is surprisingly flat in its town center, so as long as you stay there, you won’t need to worry much about stairs.

The number of stairs you’ll need to climb really depends on where you stay. Make sure to know exactly what to expect before booking.

4.Don’t rush your decision about renting a car

Although it may seem like the best way to explore the Amalfi Coast is by car, think carefully before renting one! I strongly advise against driving along the Amalfi Coast, especially between June and September, and even May and October are extremely busy months.

As mentioned earlier, there is only ONE MAIN ROAD that connects all the major towns on the Amalfi Coast. This narrow, cliffside road is full of twists and turns, with heavy traffic. In fact, the traffic has become so problematic that local authorities have recently implemented new restrictions on who can drive, and when.

A license plate system has been introduced for the high season, allowing alternating driving days. However, I’m not convinced this will make the area any more livable for locals. Some people we spoke to mentioned they can’t even use their cars during the summer due to the overwhelming traffic and the fact that it takes hours to get anywhere, not to mention the lack of parking.

Parking on the Amalfi Coast is both limited and expensive. Even if you manage to find a spot, you’ll likely pay around 10 EUR per hour for a small car.

So, I really can’t emphasize this enough: we do not recommend driving on the Amalfi Coast during the high season. Honestly, I’d think twice about renting a car even in April or early November.

Also, keep in mind that many areas in Italy, including the Amalfi Coast, have limited traffic zones (ZTL), where only local traffic is allowed. These areas are monitored by cameras, and if you enter a restricted zone, you can be fined for each violation.

So, if you’re driving around searching for a parking spot and accidentally enter a restricted zone multiple times, you’ll face fines for each entry. It’s just not worth the hassle!

Instead, consider booking car transfers or ferries for longer distances, or use public transportation to travel between towns without a harbor. Renting a scooter is another option, but driving along the Amalfi Coast during peak season can be overwhelming, especially if you’re inexperienced. This is not the ideal place to rent a scooter if you’re new to it.

If you’re willing to tackle lots of stairs and do some hiking, walking between towns on the Amalfi Coast is an option. However, this is best suited for those with plenty of time who want to explore the area more deeply, beyond the main tourist attractions.

PRO TIP: If you do decide to rent a car, check out this website. They offer some of the best deals available, and you can also opt for their affordable full insurance. Many local car rental agencies that advertise “full” insurance have fine print that reveals they only cover 50% of costs in the Campania region (which includes the Amalfi Coast).

There are countless tours departing from Naples, Sorrento, or even Rome, offering a range of options to match your interests and budget. Most tours include visits to the Amalfi Coast’s top towns, with some even offering boat rides to explore the coastline from the water. Additionally, some tours allow time for a swim.

Here’s a curated list of some of the best day tours to the Amalfi Coast:

  • From Sorrento: This popular car tour takes you to the most scenic spots, offering plenty of free time in Amalfi. If you’d like, you can also visit Ravello. It’s also one of the most affordable Amalfi Coast day trips.

  • From Naples or Sorrento: This car tour is one of the most well-liked options from Naples to the Amalfi Coast. It includes all transportation and visits the top attractions like Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello, with the added option of a boat ride.

  • From Naples: This car day tour is one of the most comprehensive Amalfi Coast excursions from Naples. You can select from different options and group sizes based on your budget and preferences.

TIP: Depending on where you’re staying and your plans, you could even book multiple day tours in the Amalfi Coast region. For instance, if you’re staying in Sorrento, you could take a car tour covering the Amalfi Coast’s highlights one day, then go on a guided tour of the Path of the Gods the next.

Whether you are traveling on the Amalfi Coast by car, bus, or boat, consider taking something for motion sickness.

Some roads on the Amalfi Coast are really winding and traveling here will upset even the strongest stomach. This is especially the case for the road east of Positano and almost all the way to Amalfi town.

We didn’t experience any problems on the boat, but all of us were really glad to get out of the car/van/ bus every time we drove even for just 15-20 minutes.

If you think the Amalfi Coast is busy in May or June, weekends in July and August are even worse. If you’re flying out of Naples on a Sunday evening, it’s best to leave early, as roads can be packed. The ideal visiting months are May, and late September to October, though they’re becoming busier. For fewer crowds, consider April or late October-November, but expect unpredictable weather. The quietest time is November to March, though many businesses close, and transportation options are limited during winter.

Bring sturdy shoes or sandals for exploring, but don’t forget to pack dressier shoes for the evening, as Italians typically dress up and avoid casual footwear like sneakers or flip-flops. Since many beaches are rocky or pebbly, water shoes are also a good idea for comfort.

If you’re traveling light, it’s easy to stop by these ancient ruins either on your way to or from the coast. However, if you’re carrying a lot of luggage, it’s a good idea to head to your hotel first and leave the sightseeing for later. These archaeological sites also make for an excellent day trip from either Sorrento or Naples, offering a chance to explore the history of these ancient Roman cities.

By beginning your day early, you can take in more sights, enjoy leisurely meals, and still have time to relax before the evening rush. Additionally, early mornings often present the best lighting for photography, especially when capturing the stunning coastal views. Many restaurants and shops open earlier too, so you can experience local culture without the usual crowds.
