Things to Do and See on the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is an extraordinary place to visit, and no matter how long you spend there, every moment will be unforgettable.

It’s lively, always crowded, and downright hot in the summer months, but the charm of the place makes up for any inconvenience. Honestly, there are so many recreational opportunities along this coast that it’s impossible to get bored.

It’s not hard to see why people are drawn to this UNESCO World Heritage site: the coast is extraordinary for more than its crystal-clear sea and culinary delights; it’s rich in history, art, craftsmanship, tradition, and natural beauty.

Enchanting towns are perched on the rocky Lattari Mountains, while others extend all the way to the azure waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Towns like Sorrento and Positano are household names, while others with just as much to offer are frequented by those in the know. Here are the best things to do along the Amalfi Coast, traveling from north to south.

Planning your Trip to the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast, one of Italy’s jewels, is known for its picturesque cliff-top villages, crystal-clear waters, and breathtaking views.

Located south of Naples, it offers a perfect mix of natural beauty, history, and exceptional cuisine based on fresh ingredients and rich flavors.

Home to iconic towns like Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello, the region enchants with its pastel-colored houses, winding streets, and cuisine full of specialties, from fresh seafood to the famous lemon delight. However, given its size and the shape of the land, planning the trip can be a complex task.

To help you make the most of this experience, we’ve gathered all the essential information on where to go, where to stay, and how to get around, so your trip can be seamless and hassle-free.

When to visit the Amalfi Coast

The best time to visit the Coast depends on your preferences:

Spring (April-June): mild climate, spectacular blooms, fewer crowds. Perfect for trekking and cultural visits.

Summer (July-August): the hottest and busiest season. Ideal for the sea, but roads and beaches can be congested.

Autumn (September-October): still pleasant temperatures, warm sea and fewer tourists. A great choice.

Winter (November-March): many hotels and restaurants close, but the landscape retains its charm.

2. Getting to the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast does not have its own airport, so the main options are:

Flight to Naples (Capodichino Airport): the closest airport, about 60 km from Amalfi. From here you can take a train to Salerno or Sorrento and then a bus or ferry.

Train to Salerno or Sorrento:

Salerno is a great starting point, with frequent ferries to Amalfi and Positano.

Sorrento is well connected to Naples with the Circumvesuviana, from here buses and ferries leave for the Amalfi Coast.

Private car or taxi: convenient but expensive and inconvenient for parking.

Scooter rental: perfect for getting between cities avoiding traffic.

Ferries and buses: ferries are the most scenic way to get around, while SITA buses are cheap but often crowded.

3.Where to stay on the Amalfi Coast

Choosing the right location depends on the type of experience you want:

Positano – Perfect for a romantic stay, but expensive. Boutique hotels, elegant restaurants and breathtaking views.

Amalfi – The heart of the Coast, with its iconic Duomo and a central location for exploring the area.

Ravello – Ideal for those seeking tranquility and spectacular views, famous for its historic villas.

Sorrento – Great base for visiting the Coast, Capri and Naples, with more budget options.

Maiori and Minori – Wider beaches and more affordable prices, perfect for families.

Vietri sul Mare – Close to Salerno, known for its artistic ceramics and a more authentic atmosphere.

Planning a trip to the Amalfi Coast can seem complicated, but with the right precautions you can have an unforgettable experience among dreamy landscapes, delicious food and authentic traditions.

Capri is among the top 10 spots you can reach from Naples

Sail around Capri and into the Blue Grotto

A trip to Capri is not complete without a boat tour around the island, a unique experience that allows you to discover its history, its legends and its breathtaking views. During the navigation, you will have the opportunity to admire spectacular cliffs, hidden caves and luxurious villas belonging to famous people.

A Journey Among the Faraglioni

One of the most exciting moments of the tour is the passage between the famous Faraglioni, the imposing rock formations that are the symbol of Capri. According to a mythological legend, they were thrown by the Cyclops Polyphemus while he was trying to hit Ulysses while he was fleeing.

Today, crossing the natural arch formed by the Faraglioni is an iconic moment of the tour: it is said that whoever exchanges a kiss at this point, while the boat’s siren sounds, will have eternal love and luck.

The Blue Grotto

Among the wonders of Capri, the Blue Grotto is undoubtedly one of the most evocative. Its incredibly bright water, of an intense and almost unreal blue, is the result of a natural phenomenon: sunlight filters through an underwater opening, creating a magical effect.

Inside, the atmosphere is surreal, the silence is interrupted only by the rowers, who often sing Neapolitan melodies, amplifying the sensation of being in a place outside of time.

In Roman times, this cave was considered a private pool by the emperor Tiberius and is said to have housed a submerged temple. Today, some of the statues that decorated the entrance to the cave are preserved in the museum of Anacapri.

Visiting Pompeii and Herculaneum, what to expect

Visit Pompei

Pompeii is one of the most extraordinary destinations in the world for those who love history and archaeology. If you only have one day available, you can still visit the most significant places of this ancient Roman city, buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD and incredibly preserved over time

What to See in Pompeii

Porta Marina and the Forum
Start your visit from Porta Marina, one of the main entrances, and head towards the Forum, the political and commercial heart of ancient Pompeii. Here you will find temples, columns and the remains of the Basilica, which once housed courts and administrative functions.

The Temple of Apollo and the Temple of Jupiter
Near the Forum are two of the most important temples in the city. The Temple of Apollo, with its columns and statue of the god, is one of the oldest, while the Temple of Jupiter, located at the end of the Forum, was dedicated to the main deity of the Roman pantheon.

The Lupanar
One of the most curious places in Pompeii is the Lupanar, the ancient brothel of the city. Its rooms are decorated with explicit frescoes, which depict the activities that took place there.

The Teatro Grande and the Teatro Piccolo
Pompeii is home to two theaters: the Teatro Grande, which could accommodate up to 5,000 spectators, and the more intimate Teatro Piccolo, used for musical and philosophical performances

A day in Pompeii is an extraordinary journey into Roman history, a unique experience that will make you feel as if you have gone back in time

Explore the Fiordo di Furore

The Furore Fjord is one of the most spectacular natural wonders of the Amalfi Coast. This narrow inlet, carved out by the Schiato stream, is surrounded by high rock walls and is home to a small pebble beach bathed by crystal-clear waters.

Above the fjord stands a 30-meter-high arched bridge, part of the Strada Statale 163, from which a spectacular diving competition takes place every year. Access is via a staircase of about 200 steps carved into the rock.

To avoid parking problems, it is recommended to arrive by bus. The best time to visit is in the morning, when the sun illuminates the waters, creating breathtaking reflections.

Chill out away from the crowds at Atrani

Atrani is a small jewel of the Amalfi Coast, known for being one of the most authentic and least touristy villages in the area.

Located a few steps from Amalfi, it is the smallest municipality in Italy in terms of surface area, but it contains a unique charm with its pastel-colored houses, narrow streets and stairways that intertwine between arches and courtyards.

The heart of the village is Piazza Umberto I, a lively square surrounded by bars and restaurants, where you can breathe an authentic and relaxed atmosphere.

From here, narrow streets lead to the Church of San Salvatore de ‘Birecto, a building dating back to the 10th century, famous for its ancient clock and Byzantine bronze portal.

The beach of Atrani, nestled between the rocks and bathed by crystal clear waters, is one of the most picturesque on the Coast. Less crowded than other nearby locations, it offers a corner of tranquility with a breathtaking view.

Thanks to its small size and strategic position, Atrani is perfect for those who want to discover the true essence of the Coast, away from mass tourism, but with the possibility of easily reaching Amalfi and other places in the area.

Shop for artistic ceramics in Vietri

Vietri sul Mare is the last pearl of the Amalfi Coast, located at the southern end of this extraordinary region. For centuries, its economy has revolved around the artisanal production of ceramics, an ancient art that has made the village famous throughout Italy.

Vietri ceramics are immediately recognizable thanks to their distinctive patterns, characterized by bright colors such as blue, yellow and red, often embellished with geometric or nature-inspired decorations.

Walking through the streets of Vietri, it is impossible not to notice these splendid artifacts: plates, vases, majolica and other household objects decorate shops, balconies and facades, transforming the city into an open-air museum.

The inhabitants of Vietri have practiced this mastery since the 5th century BC, when they traded their creations with the Etruscans. However, it was in the Middle Ages, around 1200 AD, that Vietri ceramics acquired fame and value, becoming a sought-after product exported throughout the Mediterranean.

If you have had the chance to visit Sicily, you may notice a certain similarity between their ceramics and those of Vietri, the result of ancient cultural exchanges between the two lands.

Each piece is unique and handmade with great passion. Enter one of the artisan workshops and ask the meaning of the famous donkey statuettes, known as “ciucciarielli”, that you will find displayed everywhere.

The artisans will proudly tell you the story of this traditional symbol, handed down from generation to generation, in a tradition that is still alive and destined to last over time

To finish on a sweet note, try a crunchy sfogliatella or a rum babà, accompanied by a good Neapolitan coffee. Each dish tells a story of passion, tradition and love for good food, making every meal an unforgettable experience.

 Go Shopping

Shopping on the Amalfi Coast is an experience that combines elegance, tradition and authenticity. Among the characteristic alleys and panoramic streets overlooking the sea, there are refined boutiques, artisan workshops and historic shops where you can discover unique products.

From fashion to custom-made sandals, from hand-decorated ceramics to the typical flavors of the region, each purchase tells the story and identity of this splendid land.

Attention to detail, craftsmanship and a taste for beauty emerge in every corner of this enchanting coast, transforming shopping into a special experience.

The Amalfi Coast is also famous for its boho-chic style, made of light and airy garments, often embellished with artisanal embroidery and vibrant colors inspired by the sea and nature.

Positano, in particular, is considered the cradle of summer fashion: here, boutiques offer exclusive collections of linen and cotton dresses, perfect for a sophisticated but at the same time relaxed look.

Take a Boat Tour of the Amalfi Coast

One of the most fascinating ways to admire the wonderful Amalfi Coast is from the sea, an extraordinary experience that allows you to discover spectacular landscapes and secret corners unreachable by land.

This coastal stretch, recognized by UNESCO for its unique beauty, is characterized by imposing cliffs, charming villages and turquoise waters, offering sceneries worthy of a painting.

One of the advantages of a boat trip is the possibility of stopping for a swim in quiet bays, away from crowded beaches. Many rental services also offer tailor-made experiences, such as aperitifs at sunset, snorkelling in the most suggestive coves or even lunches on board with typical local dishes.

Those who want to explore the Coast by sea have several alternatives: from scheduled ferries that connect the main locations, to private tours or organized excursions. Whatever the choice, sailing along this coast offers unique emotions, between breathtaking views and an authentically Mediterranean atmosphere.

Limoncello Amalfi

Taste Authentic Limoncello

Savoring a glass of real limoncello is an experience not to be missed for those visiting the Amalfi Coast. This liqueur with an intense and refreshing flavor is born from the infusion of the fragrant peels of local lemons in pure alcohol, to which water and sugar are added to obtain a balanced and enveloping flavor.

Served very cold, it is ideal both as a digestive after a meal and as an aperitif.
The secret of authentic limoncello lies in the “Sfusato Amalfitano” lemons, grown on the sunny terraces of the Coast. These citrus fruits, characterized by a thick rind and an unmistakable aroma, give the liqueur its fresh and citrusy note.

Perfect as a gift or travel souvenir, limoncello represents the essence of the Amalfi Coast: a mix of sun, Mediterranean scents and artisan tradition. Every sip brings to mind the colors and breathtaking views of this extraordinary land.

Go Hiking

The Amalfi Coast offers an extraordinary contrast between the imposing mountains on one side and the infinite expanse of the sea on the other, creating a scene of rare beauty.

This spectacular landscape is crossed by a network of panoramic trails, perfect for those who want to immerse themselves in nature and discover hidden corners of the region.

However, it is essential to choose the right time to undertake these excursions. In the summer months, the intense heat can make walking particularly challenging under the blazing sun.

For this reason, the ideal seasons to explore the trails are spring and autumn, especially between the end of October and November, when the climate is more pleasant and nature is dressed in suggestive colors.

Some routes can be tiring and require a good level of training, but the breathtaking views repay every effort. Among the most famous is the renowned Path of the Gods, which offers spectacular views of the coast and the islands on the horizon.

This itinerary, along with many others, offers the opportunity to experience the Coast in an authentic way, away from the crowds, and to admire uncontaminated landscapes that are difficult to reach otherwise.

Pop over to Paestum

Paestum is one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in Italy, famous for its extraordinarily preserved Greek temples.

Founded by the Greeks in the 6th century BC with the name of Poseidonia, the city was later conquered by the Romans, who enriched its architectural heritage without altering its magnificence.

The Greek temples of Paestum are among the best examples of Doric architecture in the world and are: Temple of Hera is the oldest, dating back to 550 BC, Temple of Neptune is the most majestic, built around 460 BC and the Temple of Athena is smaller but with distinctive architectural details.

Paestum In addition to its extraordinary historical heritage, it also boasts splendid sandy beaches, it is an unmissable destination for those who want to immerse themselves in the art, history and culture of ancient Magna Graecia

Try to Find the Best Spots to See Vesuvius

Imposing and majestic, Vesuvius looms over the horizon, characterizing the landscape of Naples and some areas of the Amalfi Coast. If you find yourself in Pompeii or Castellammare di Stabia, it will be impossible not to notice its dominant presence, a true spectacle of nature.

For those who want to explore it up close, the Vesuvius National Park offers hiking trails that lead up to the crater. The trails immersed in nature offer extraordinary views of the Gulf of Naples, transforming the climb into an unforgettable experience.

There are also several panoramic points perfect for admiring the majesty of the volcano. Among the most evocative, the Pozzano Beach, near Castellammare di Stabia, offers a spectacular view with Vesuvius rising above the sea.

The ancient ruins of Pompeii also offer fascinating views, with the volcano as a backdrop to the buried city. Another breathtaking perspective can be enjoyed from Vico Equense, with spectacular views of Vesuvius and the coast.

Wherever you look at it, Vesuvius remains a powerful symbol of Campania, guardian of ancient stories, legends and extraordinary nature.

Visit Castellammare di Stabia

While many travelers head to Sorrento, Amalfi, or Positano, Castellammare di Stabia remains a lesser-known but charming destination, located right at the entrance to the Amalfi Coast and about a half-hour drive from Naples.

During our stay in the area, we chose to stay here for the majority of the trip, not only for the affordability, but also for the surprises that this town had in store for us.

Castellammare is ideal for those who want to enjoy exceptional cuisine at more affordable prices than the more touristy resorts on the coast.

Restaurants worth a visit include Piazzetta Milù, perfect for those who love gourmet cuisine, Elixir, renowned for its extraordinary pizza, and Trattoria Pizzeria del Mare da Salvatore, a great choice for a genuine and flavorful meal.
