2. Getting to the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast does not have its own airport, so the main options are:

 Flight to Naples (Capodichino Airport): the closest airport, about 60 km from Amalfi. From here you can take a train to Salerno or Sorrento and then a bus or ferry.

Train to Salerno or Sorrento:

Salerno is a great starting point, with frequent ferries to Amalfi and Positano.

Sorrento is well connected to Naples with the Circumvesuviana, from here buses and ferries leave for the Amalfi Coast.

Private car or taxi: convenient but expensive and inconvenient for parking.

Scooter rental: perfect for getting between cities avoiding traffic.

Ferries and buses: ferries are the most scenic way to get around, while SITA buses are cheap but often crowded.

To avoid parking problems, it is recommended to arrive by bus. The best time to visit is in the morning, when the sun illuminates the waters, creating breathtaking reflections.

Chill out away from the crowds at Atrani

Atrani is a small jewel of the Amalfi Coast, known for being one of the most authentic and least touristy villages in the area.

Located a few steps from Amalfi, it is the smallest municipality in Italy in terms of surface area, but it contains a unique charm with its pastel-colored houses, narrow streets and stairways that intertwine between arches and courtyards.

The heart of the village is Piazza Umberto I, a lively square surrounded by bars and restaurants, where you can breathe an authentic and relaxed atmosphere.

From here, narrow streets lead to the Church of San Salvatore de ‘Birecto, a building dating back to the 10th century, famous for its ancient clock and Byzantine bronze portal.

The beach of Atrani, nestled between the rocks and bathed by crystal clear waters, is one of the most picturesque on the Coast. Less crowded than other nearby locations, it offers a corner of tranquility with a breathtaking view.

Thanks to its small size and strategic position, Atrani is perfect for those who want to discover the true essence of the Coast, away from mass tourism, but with the possibility of easily reaching Amalfi and other places in the area.

Shop for artistic ceramics in Vietri

Vietri sul Mare is the last pearl of the Amalfi Coast, located at the southern end of this extraordinary region. For centuries, its economy has revolved around the artisanal production of ceramics, an ancient art that has made the village famous throughout Italy.

Vietri ceramics are immediately recognizable thanks to their distinctive patterns, characterized by bright colors such as blue, yellow and red, often embellished with geometric or nature-inspired decorations.

Walking through the streets of Vietri, it is impossible not to notice these splendid artifacts: plates, vases, majolica and other household objects decorate shops, balconies and facades, transforming the city into an open-air museum.

The inhabitants of Vietri have practiced this mastery since the 5th century BC, when they traded their creations with the Etruscans. However, it was in the Middle Ages, around 1200 AD, that Vietri ceramics acquired fame and value, becoming a sought-after product exported throughout the Mediterranean.

If you have had the chance to visit Sicily, you may notice a certain similarity between their ceramics and those of Vietri, the result of ancient cultural exchanges between the two lands.

Each piece is unique and handmade with great passion. Enter one of the artisan workshops and ask the meaning of the famous donkey statuettes, known as “ciucciarielli”, that you will find displayed everywhere.

The artisans will proudly tell you the story of this traditional symbol, handed down from generation to generation, in a tradition that is still alive and destined to last over time

Castellammare is ideal for those who want to enjoy exceptional cuisine at more affordable prices than the more touristy resorts on the coast.

Restaurants worth a visit include Piazzetta Milù, perfect for those who love gourmet cuisine, Elixir, renowned for its extraordinary pizza, and Trattoria Pizzeria del Mare da Salvatore, a great choice for a genuine and flavorful meal.

Whether you are traveling from Naples to the Amalfi Coast or planning a visit to Pompeii by car, Castellammare di Stabia is an interesting stop, perfect for discovering an authentic side of Campania away from the crowds.
