What is the Path of the Gods and how to reach it
The Sentiero degli Dei, connecting the small town of Agerola with Nocelle, a section of Positano nestled on Monte Peruso’s slopes, is aptly named The Path of the Gods due to its breathtaking scenery. It’s recommended to walk from Agerola to Nocelle, as the route gently descends, offering splendid views of the Amalfi Coast and Capri.
Commencing the hike in Bomerano, a part of Agerola, travelers can reach Agerola via Sita buses from Amalfi, requesting a stop at Bomerano. Follow the road signs from there to find the trailhead.
From Positano: Take a bus to Amalfi and then another bus from Amalfi to Agerola (2 hours). From Sorrento: Take a bus to Amalfi via Positano and then another bus from Amalfi to Agerola (3 hours).
The trail concludes in Nocelle, the upper area of Positano. To reach Positano’s center, descend approximately 1,500 steps on foot or take a bus. From Positano, buses and ferries are available to return to Sorrento and Amalfi.
Getting to the path of the gods by car
For those with their own car, parking is in Agerola, necessitating a return either by walking the path or taking a bus from Positano. The Sentiero degli Dei can also start from Praiano, involving a climb up steps to reach the Colle Serra Pass at 580 meters above sea level.
What to expect
Following the Sentiero degli Dei, marked with white and red signs labeled 02, walkers descend from Colle Serra to a fountain. To the left of the fountain, an old mule path begins in Praiano. Continuing along the road, walkers encounter the Convent of San Domenico.
The landscape transforms from hills with sparse shrubs and grazing animals to a Mediterranean setting with holm-oaks, arbutus, heather, and rosemary. The trail becomes challenging, navigating Vallone Grarelle with ascents, descents, and stunning panoramas before reaching Nocelle.
In ancient times, Nocelle was only accessible by a steep flight of steps from Positano. Today, walkers can descend by bus or on foot via 1,500 steps leading to Arienzo. In summer, an additional 300 steps to Arienzo beach offer a refreshing swim. Following the SS163 for about 1 kilometer from Arienzo, walkers reach Positano’s center.
A suggestion from Amalfi Coast Day Tours
Agerola is renowned for fiordilatte, a distinct fresh mozzarella. Before starting the walk, visit a salumeria to purchase focaccia and fior di latte for a picnic. Alternatively, after Nocelle, continue for about 1 kilometer to La Tagliata restaurant for a delightful meal on the terrace with a sea and Capri view.
